Cordiners Artifacts: No 2 - The Deacon's Goblet

Image
Due to the generosity of Lord Forte in the 1980s, each Deacon and Visitor has a silver goblet, created by students at Glasgow School of Art. Each goblet is decorated with a symbol relevant to the craft - the Gardeners, for example, have the tree from the Garden of Eden complete with snake. In the Cordiners' case, the artist chose to quote one of the charges from our coat of arms - the gold crown. It is not quite the marquess's crown of our blazon but it still looks very lovely. The Deacon uses it the dinners of all the crafts.

Cordiners Artifacts: No 1 - The Bells, the bells,,,,

Image
The Trades House archivist, Craig Bryce, whose superb book on the history of the institution came out last year, has kindly provided us with a set of excellent photographs, taken by George Mahoney, of the Incorporation's artifacts. Since it is not always possible to get a good look at these during our functions, I thought people might like to see them here.

A number of Incorporations possess Bells, many of them are very old. Today only the Incorporation of Cordiners use them at their Deacon's Choosing Dinner. During the Dinner, when the Deacon is about to speak, he/she rings a bell and it is echoed by a further two bells rung by the Collector and Deacon's Goudie..

Guests at the Choosing Dinner

Image
One of the joyous features of the Annual Choosing Dinner is our regular group of loyal and far-travelled guests. ExDeacon Adrian Pierotti organized a day out in the country the next day to thank our London friends and the group from Basel who have been coming to our dinners for years and entertained us royally in Switzerland each year.

First of all a rather good extra photograph from the Dinner showing Deacon Bergman, speaker Maurice Corry MSP, exDeacon and toastmaster Adrian Pierotti and Collector of the House John McKnight. Also on display is the great chair of the Incorporation.
